When an advertisement is viewed, the goal is for it to make sense. At least that should be the goal. Most often, ad executives think that if they produce something that is thought provoking, it will force the audience to remember their advertisement.

While it is okay for an ad to be thought provoking, it should never be because the grammar usage is incorrect. Unless of course, that’s the angle. An advertisement, or business article should never leave its original hands without being checked for grammatical errors. The steps to follow are quite simple and easy to remember.

When writing business articles remember to SHOPP. Spelling is the most important thing and the most easily over looked in writing. It is the easiest to check and most often forgotten. Using a spell check function through a computer’s word processor is often accurate when obviously misspelling a word.

They want to read information that is directed at them. So, write like you are talking to them. Another point to remember when talking directly to your audience, make sure you are writing on their level, not talking down to them. Be aware of other business articles. This will leave them disillusioned, and they will take their business elsewhere.

Practice makes perfect when it comes to writing. Start a blog to feel more comfortable with writing. This will especially help with eliminating any filler your business articles may have. When blogging, you’ll quickly realize the words that are used too often.

This is absolutely true when it comes to proofreading. Having a second, or even third set of eyes review the document will most of the time catch something that has been missed by the author.

If the acronym SHOPP is applied to writing business articles, sales should reflect accordingly. Anyone can be a skilled writer when they apply these simple principles that will remind them to check and double check their work. It is also a good idea to have a friend or colleague read the article to check for mistakes.

They will also offer great advice if something doesn’t make sense, or just doesn’t sound quite right. Apply SHOPP, welcome second opinions and have fun writing!
